The German rap group Beginner on tour with GLP

Just in time to celebrate their 25th anniversary, and after six years of stage absence, German rap group Beginner are back. Eizi Eiz, Denyo and DJ Mad sound as fresh as ever with their brand new album, Advanced Chemistry.

Their fans had to wait a long time for a new album, after it had been speculated over and over when the new release from this Hamburg trio would actually be available. The first signs suggested 2010, then 2011 and finally 2012 — but still the fans had to wait a further four years for the release.
But the wait was well worth it, and with the arrival of the album in August 2016, the tour dates were also announced. The first leg of 14 dates toured Germany in November and December and from March 2017 onwards, a further 16 dates have been scheduled, with box offices reporting almost sold out venues already.

Bertil Mark is responsible for the lighting design on this tour. He has dipped extensively into GLP’s portfolio — in particular the new GT-1 hybrid lamp, of which 70 fixtures alone have been used. “I like the feel and punch of these multi-fixtures. I was traveling with Rammstein for the first time in the summer with these lamps and their flexibility convinced me immediately. It’s no problem at all to produce either tight, rich beams or nice mid-air effects,” says Bertil Mark about the impression GT-1, with its impressive continuous zoom ratio of 2.5 to 55 degrees.

In addition to taking advantage of the 440 watt Osram Sirius HRI discharge lamp, Bertil Mark is also setting the standard in his use of GLP’s LED models from the impression series during this tour. The fixture count shows 56 impression X4 Bar 20 and 24 impression X4, both of which have long been a part of Mark’s portfolio on different designs. “The Impression X4 Bars I have used for quite some time, but I am always fascinated by the effects that are possible,” he says.
For Beginner, the Bars are used in different locations — on the stage edge in the rig, and in Diamond-shaped design elements directly above the artists. I think it is nice to be able to make interesting light angles,” says the designer in explaining his idea. A total of 24 impression X4, each containing 19 RGBW LEDs and a 7-50 ° zoom, have been tripod-mounted by Bertil Mark on the sides of the stage. These provide color and movement throughout the set.

ETC lighting solution for the Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama

Situated at the University of Manchester’s campus, the Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama recently underwent a significant refit, including the installation of a control desk, LED luminaires and power controls from ETC, all supplied and installed by Stage Electrics.

Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall

An important arts venue for north-west England, the Martin Harris Centre offers students a fantastic space in which to study and perform, as well as hosting many professional musicians, performers and prize-winning authors. It provides an excellent space for contemporary and classic theatre, music and comedy events, and holds a reading series that has in the past featured such literary luminaries as Martin Amis, Will Self, John Banville and Clive James.
The project, which was made possible due to significant funding from the Faculty of Humanities, is part of a campus-wide initiative that supports the University’s commitment to environmental sustainability and saw a complete overhaul of the lighting in the venue’s Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall and John Thaw Studio Theatre.

Martin Harris Centre Exterior

Longstanding supplier to the University, Stage Electrics was appointed to design, specify and install a complete lighting system for the two multipurpose facilities. Karl Spencer, the venue’s technical services manager, worked closely with Stage Electrics’ Rob Beamer and Karl Formstone to ensure the right solution was selected and installed.
“Energy efficiency was a driving factor in this project, but there were other points to consider too, like flexibility,” says Rob Beamer.
“The venue hosts a lot of classical concerts where maximum light levels are critical, whereas colour rendering and colour mixing capability is important for lighting dramatic performances, for example. For power controls, space was at a premium, so we had to bear that in mind too.”

The comprehensive solution, specified following extensive demonstrations between Stage Electrics and the University, includes an Ion® console with two fader wings; a Unison Paradigm® power control system; Sensor® dimmers with ThruPower modules; and an array of ColorSource® PAR, Source Four® LED Series 2 Lustr® and Daylight HD fixtures and a comprehensive state-of-the-art house lighting system from GDS.

John Thaw Studio Theatre

Rob Beamer adds: “We put a lot of time into getting it right. The challenge was to deliver a versatile, energy-efficient lighting solution to maximise the experience for both performer and audience, without compromising on quality. And I think we have succeeded.”
Karl Spencer, the Martin Harris Centre’s technical services manager said, “As part of this extensive lighting project, our spaces have been converted to energy-efficient LED, for both lighting performances and house lighting. The end result is excellent and our performers and audiences alike are already enjoying the improved lighting. The installation offers us a flexible, efficient and sustainable lighting solution which underpins the University’s environmental sustainability strategy.”

“Naked Truth” with 64 G-Spot SGM – creative takeover of a construction site

The creative agency ACTLD of light and visual design based in Brussels, imagined a light & sound show in an unusual place – a construction site on the banks of the canal in Brussels.
During four evenings of “Bright Brussels Festival” and far from the sites and monuments well known to the general public, ACTLD’s designers were able to offer a new creation and a memorable experience to nearly 30,000 visitors.

Copyrights: © 2017 ACTLD – photo by Leslie Artamonow – www.actld.com

“Naked Truth” is a full-scale light & sound show that dresses up places with a poetic and contemporary atmosphere. The light effects, the special effects and the music are in perfect harmony with the industrial spirit of the site. Placed on a water-flooded ground and accompanied by lighting, a matrix of 64 automatic projectors (64 G-SPOT’s) reaches the sky, is reflected in the water and artificial fog, changing the perception of space and offering a new experience to the spectators.

ETC scales new heights with introduction of Prodigy P2 hoist

ETC is kicking off a new era in upper stage machinery with the introduction of the P2 hoist. Offering quick installation, easy operation and affordable system expansion, P2 – the newest hoist in ETC’s Prodigy® family – can go where other rigging systems can’t.
The compact, 130-kilogram* (*Powerhead only) P2 fixed-speed hoist has a 300-kilogram load capacity and can be used as a complete system by itself, or it can be combined with larger hoists in a hybrid system. Using five millimetre lift wire rope, it offers 15 metres of travel with up to eight lift lines. ETC’s QuickTouch® and Foundation® families of rigging controllers are feature rich, yet intuitive and uncomplicated, and work seamlessly with P2, and all of the hoist solutions from ETC Rigging.

The revolutionary features and capabilities that set ETC’s rigging products apart from others are at work in P2. The P2 hoist can be installed with or without ETC’s unique compression tube, is engineered to fit into the smallest spaces without adding lateral loads to buildings, so venues that aren’t able to use other larger hoists will finally be able to access automated rigging.
Additionally, loft blocks can be positioned independent of the building’s structural mounting points, and allows users to support the attached load in a manner best fitting the load, instead of the building. Safety is at the heart of P2, which includes load cell, and slack line detection. It also has a self-locking worm-gear system to prevent accidents. P2’s control electronics are built into the hoist, and incorporate hard-wired deadman and E-stop circuits.
Thanks to its advanced features and design, P2 is easier to install and commission than most other hoists on the market. “It takes very little time to get P2 in place,” says ETC Rigging Product Manager Nils Becker. “A pair of technicians could install six fully-commissioned hoists in a single day. That saves venues on installation costs, and results in less disruption to a production or event schedule.”

Adding additional hoists to a P2 system or upgrading existing hoists is also a simple process. “Rigging systems from other manufacturers often require significant control and wiring changes to add hoists, but ETC systems don’t,” explains European Rigging Sales Manager Enrico Nobile. “The faster installation and compatibility of our system components results in cost savings for our customers.”

Claypaky new products: Axcor Profile 900 & K-Eye HCR

Claypaky Axcor Profile 900

With the Axcor Profile 900, Claypaky has launched a new course in its design research: it is the first Claypaky spotlight to use a LED light source, instead of a traditional discharge lamp.
Claypaky has chosen to use a white LED engine with high luminous efficiency, total power of 900 watts and luminous flux of 24,000 lumen output, and couple it with a system of dichroic filters to create the colors.

Thanks to its considerable light output, the Claypaky Axcor Profile 900 goes straight in at the top of its category and features the best in modern technology in every parameter: the characteristics of the white and colored light it produces, its ability to form perfectly sharp projections, and the precision micro-mechanics of its exclusive beam shaping system.

After the B-EYE, which revolutionized the world of LED wash lights with its extraordinary effects, Claypaky has now launched the K-EYE HCR, a LED wash light which provides total control over the quality of all forms of white or colored light.
The new HCR technology used in the K-EYE is an exclusive electronic platform developed by Claypaky in conjunction with Osram to meet the needs of lighting designers all over the world who were not fully satisfied with the performance of LED devices in comparison with traditional lamps, in particular because of their incomplete color range, poor color rendering index and lack of consistency. All these limitations have been overcome in the K-EYE HCR, and it is finally possible to produce every color, every nuance and every shade with satisfactory quality.

Claypaky K-Eye HCR

The heart of the K-EYE HCR wash light is a LED light source consisting of a module with six chips, each for a different color: besides the three “classic” basic red, green and blue colors, Claypaky has added amber, cyan and lime. This exclusive Claypaky device provides a very wide color range with excellent color spectrum coverage.

Clair Brothers at PL+S with 5 new Products

Clair Brothers is about to rock your world with several unique design innovations at Prolight + Sound 2017 Booth 3.1, E37. Following the evolution and success Clair Brothers started with the C15 large format line array cabinet, the company is excited to officially announce the launch of the C12 and C8 line array products; products featuring the next evolutionary step in new mid/high technology. If you’re an installation consultant, this is a dream coming true: The C12 and C8 are available with Clair True Fit Technology horizontal waveguides custom tailored for any specific venue!

How is this done? Clair Brothers works with architects and consultants to define speaker positions and coverage requirements within a facility, taking into account all spatial characteristics and any acoustical challenges. Clair engineers then employ proprietary 3D design methods and use progressive azimuth technology to geometrically optimize a waveguide designed exactly to that room’s requirements.
The custom waveguide is precision-machined using Baltic birch plywood – a key ingredient in all Clair Brothers products; the result is a totally unique C12 or C8 loudspeaker array that naturally provides smooth, even coverage. True Fit Technology achieves maximum coverage for audience areas and minimizes architectural reflection and anomalies in both, modern or classic buildings.

The C15, C12 and C8 big brother. No images are available of the new models.

The C12 and C8 also feature a new transducer technology that offers two solid benefits. One is significant weight reduction, the other a reduction in amplifier channel requirements. Good news: These new features come with zero technical trade-offs. In fact, these features enhance the ability for the line array to be digitally beam-steered in the vertical plane with F.I.R. processing.
The C12, a double 12-inch format line array, and the C8, a double 8-inch line array, share the benefit that both can be ordered with a variety of horizontal waveguide patterns. Standard factory waveguides will be 90º and 120º, but a range of waveguides between 60º and 140º are also available. “We’re continuing the trend of a growing portfolio loaded with strong high-performance products following last year’s debut of so many others,” confirms Josh Sadd, vice president and chief engineer for Clair Brothers.

One more for the Clair Brothers One Series

Le 1.5AM+, 15’’ coaxial wedge, sporting a 1600 + 1600 Watt Powersoft amplifier and DSP

The highly successful line of One Series 12-and 15-inch coaxial stage monitors raised the bar with the introduction of the powered monitor with the 1AM+, the amplified sister of the 1AM monitor.
At PL+S this year, Clair Brothers is at it again. Witness the launch of the newest addition to the One Series line – The 1.5AM+ – the active (self-powered) version of the 1.5AM monitor.

Says Sadd, “It features a similar amplifier module to the 1AM+ made for Clair by Powersoft. And like the 1AM+, the 1.5AM+ allows the user to power a passive 1.5AM with a slave output. Just connect it by cable to a non-powered 1.5AM and power the pair. Very unique!”

The P.A. that’s stacked in your favour
If you’ve ever fantasized about a stackable point source PA that is equally at home in portable and installed applications, Clair Brothers has you covered. Offering its advanced coaxial technology, similar to that found in the One Series stage monitors, Clair Brothers is proud to introduce a point source package called the S2-System. The S2-CX is a 15-inch coax containing a 15-inch speaker and 1.5AM horn. The S2-Sub is a 21-inch format available powered or non-powered with a high power Powersoft amp module.

All products are available for purchase. More informations on the website Clair Brothers

The S10n, Exactly the same as the S10 but the dispersion pattern 30° tighter without any SPL gain but a better throw.

“S10n emphasizes Adamson’s commitment to the touring market,” comments Marc Weber, Director of Product and Brand Management, Adamson Systems Engineering.
“Based on requests from our strong clientele of touring users, this narrow version of the S10 was developed to increase the long-throw capability of S-SERIES loudspeaker packages and further expand their usability and performance in reflective spaces.”

The IS-SERIES will make its debut with the IS7 and complementing IS118 subwoofer. The IS-SERIES packs Adamson’s sophisticated tour-level technology into sleek, architecturally-friendly boxes with rugged but unobtrusive rigging solutions. As founder and namesake Brock Adamson explains, the IS-SERIES is a natural progression for the rapidly growing company.

“Adamson has a clear vision for the touring and installation markets,” he says. “Through three years of continuous rapid growth, we have not wavered from our commitment to vertical integration.
By placing our product engineering team in a common environment with industrial machinery and processes, we discover ways to engineer more hard value into product. Our newest segment-focused products are a demonstration of that philosophy, revealing the performance standard that people expect of the brand.”

The IS7 is a two-way, full-range line array cabinet containing two ND7-X5, 7” Neodymium drivers and an NH3, 1.4” exit compression driver. The critically optimized waveguide produces a slightly curved wavefront with a nominal dispersion pattern of 100° x 12.5° (H x V).

The waveguide’s efficiency allows for increased vertical dispersion without sacrificing high frequency presence in the far field while the patent-pending Controlled Summation Technology further eliminates the low-mid lobing normally associated with two-way line source systems.

The IS118, a new sub extremely close to the touring products. 137 db SPL Max versus 138 for the E119.

The companion IS118 subwoofer is loaded with a lightweight, long excursion 18” ND18-S Kevlar Neodymium driver utilizing Adamson’s Advanced Cone Architecture and a 4” voice coil for exceptional power handling. It is mounted in an ultra-efficient, front-loaded enclosure, designed to reproduce clean, musical low-frequency information.
The IS-SERIES cabinet construction uses marine-grade birch plywood and aircraft-grade steel. The IS7 is equipped with NL4 Connectors and screw terminals while the IS118 has screw terminals available on demand. A plate-and-screw rigging solution is recessed in the interior of the rear rigging fins for easy installation.
The series is available in a standard black and white, with RAL colours available on demand. The IS-SERIES is perfectly suited for a wide range of applications, including performing arts centers, live performance venues, sports venues, conference centers, and houses of worship.
The IS7 and IS118 will begin shipping in late May 2017. The S10n will begin shipping in the summer of 2017.

Memento tour in Germany

Jerry Appelt delivers epic visuals on Bad Uncles with Scenius Profile

More than 100 Claypaky Scenius Profile luminaires accompanied German hard-rock legends Bad Uncles on a winter tour of their homeland in support of their first new album in ten years ‘Memento’, with longstanding production designer Jerry Appelt selecting the innovative fixtures to create spectacular, multi-layered lighting looks.

Appelt has worked with Bad Uncles since 2002. As a result, he is accustomed to creating the high production values the band desires. “They’re a fantastic band with very powerful music which is a great base on which to create stunning looks,” he explains. “They want to give their fans the best possible experience so their standard for visuals is very high.” For the Memento tour, the band’s brief dictated a classic, high-impact rock show that incorporated a diverse range of powerful stylistic elements and reflected the identity and artwork of the album, which reached number one in the German charts.

Appelt worked alongside video director Roland Greil to craft the resulting design, which was based around five automated triangular shaped monoliths. Each provided three distinctly different looks by rotating to display a different visual element; one side featured high resolution LED screens which displayed dynamic video content by Berlin-based Blitzen, and other moving lights including the Scenius Profiles and the third conventional tungsten fixtures. Providing the entire lighting package for the Bad Uncles’ show was PRG Germany.

“The Scenius Profile has an incredible light output which both allowed it to break through the video-heavy parts of the show and also to create awe-inspiring stand-alone looks when the screens were off,” says Appelt. “It’s an extremely powerful, versatile fixture which complemented the rest of the rig beautifully.”
The Scenius Profile features a Lok-it! HTI 1400/PS Osram lamp, an extremely high CRI and a zoom that ranges from eight to fifty degrees (1:6 ratio). The optical reflector has been designed specifically for the product, in order to make the projection perfectly uniform across the whole beam opening. If used in conjunction with the newly developed frost filter, the fixture can also be applied as a highly effective wash light.

As well as rigged on the monoliths, the design featured Scenius Profile fixtures in the overhead truss, as side lighting and on the floor. From these positions they provided visual accents in a range of colours.
“The Scenius Profile has a fantastic colour mixing system; combined with their flat field they integrated perfectly with the high resolution LED walls to create a cohesive visual picture,” continues Appelt.

The Scenius Profile’s CMY colour mixing system works alongside a CTO device, offering a four colour mixing system each of which can be adjusted gradually with 16-bit high precision. The system provides an infinite range of colours, from bright, vibrant hues to softer pastels and warm shades of amber.
Bad Uncles (Böhse Onkelz in their native German) reunited in 2014, putting an end to an eleven-year hiatus. The band released ‘Memento’ in August 2016 and in November began their tour of Germany, with additional dates in Austria and Switzerland.
